Extracurricular Activities
Art + Math = Awesome
Do you love art? Math and art can go hand-in-hand. Artists and mathematicians use geometry in their work — including shapes, symmetry, proportion, and measurement. Come get creative and learn how the math you've been taught will be used to make beautiful artwork! Art + Math = Awesome club runs on Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. - 8:35 a.m. in room 144.
Before School Sports
Before School Sports will give students an opportunity to wake up and get their bodies moving. We will play games and activities that students are familiar with and enjoy. This will be a fun way for students to start their morning. Before School Sports runs on Tuesdays OR Thursdays (please only select one of these days) from 8:00 a.m. - 8:35 a.m. in the Gym.
Changemakers Club
Changemakers Club will build students' knowledge of diverse perspectives and cultural awareness. Students will be empowered to become advocates and upstanders when they see injustices in their classrooms, school, and community. We want this club to be led by the passions and ideas of the students who join, but one of our goals is to help West School celebrate diversity in a visible way. Students might design a bulletin board for Hispanic Heritage Month, make posters encouraging other students to celebrate inclusivity in their Halloween costumes, and even write a letter to the governor about instituting more eco-friendly laws in Illinois. This will also be a safe space for students to talk about their identities and questions they have about diversity. Changemakers club runs on Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. - 8:35 a.m. in room 146.
Chorus Club
The West School Chorus Club is a singing and performing group open to all 3rd and 4th grade students. In the club we work on proper singing techniques, learning several songs with some choreography, and explore singing in harmony. We also have a ton of fun!! The students rehearse for several weeks and then give a final performance for family and friends. We also have opportunities to do some outreach performances for our senior community. This experience is great opportunity to bring the younger and older generations together in a fun and positive way. Not only do the students learn about singing and performing, they also learn that they can use their talents to bring some light and joy into the lives of others. Chorus club runs on Wednesdays from 8:00 a.m. - 8:35 a.m. in the chorus room.
Coding and Robotics
The Coding and Robotics Club is back! You will have an opportunity to explore three coding robots: Sphero Bolt, Ozobot, and Dash, as well as circuits, logic coding games, and Little Bits. Sharpen your skills in sequencing, problem-solving, logic, creativity, and communication. Coding and Robotics club runs on Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. - 8:35 a.m. in the Innovation Lab.
Garden Club
The West School Garden Club will be an all inclusive club for all types of learners. Each week will feature an activity related to horticulture and we will explore how growing vegetables, flowers, and plants can improve our overall health and happiness. Some sample activities may include: year round gardening using a cold frame; starting seedlings indoors; dormancy of winter bulbs; winter sowing; terrarium building; the importance of planning and prepping a garden space; companion planting; composting; and many others! This club will provide an opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of how food and agriculture are related to STEAM, as well as exposure to different avenues of gardening, including the importance of urban gardening. The club will offer students a structured yet relaxed atmosphere to engage with peers. Garden club runs on Tuesdays from 8:00 a.m. - 8:35 a.m. in the Innovation Lab.
Innovation Club
The Innovation Club will teach students to tinker, explore STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) concepts, examine computer programming, and more. Students will design and engineer with hands-on projects using unconventional materials, as well as using their iPads. This is a great club for students that want to roll up their sleeves and get to work! Innovation club runs on Fridays from 8:00 a.m. - 8:35 a.m. in the Innovation Lab.
